CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The dim sunlight shone through my window, cascading Zeke in a golden glow as he slept peacefully next to me. I laid there watching him breathing so calmly. His face was relaxed and even his jagged scar seemed softer. I sighed lightly, pulling the thick velvet blanket up around me. Is this what it would be like waking up next to this beautiful man every morning? How did I go from being so lonely to having someone like him in my life?

I stretched and snuggled into the bed even more. I laid there staring at him wondering when our bond would snap into place. I was starting to worry that he was wrong about me. What if we weren’t soulmates? I wanted to be his soulmate and I knew just how badly he wanted me. It was clear in everything he did. The way he looked at me with such intensity and how he approached the situation with my father. He came up with that plan to get his brothers captured just so he could ask for my hand in marriage. There was this small part of me that wondered if he would have been interested in me without the pull of the bond. He was a King and I had just been some random woman. He probably wouldn’t have even looked twice at me.

Without opening his eyes he mumbled, “I can practically feel you staring at me.”

I grinned and reached a hand over to move a strand of hair out of his face. He grabbed my hand and held it to his cheek. Then he turned and kissed the palm of my hand so gently I could barely feel it.

“Come closer to me,” he whispered. “I don’t like you being so far away.”

A small laugh escaped from me. There were barely two feet between us. Before I could move, he rolled to his side and reached for me. He slid his arms around me and pulled me to him. I snuggled in as close as I could get. I loved feeling his bare skin on mine. He started playing with my hair and kissed the top of my head.

“Do you think we would be like this if you hadn’t felt the pull of the bond?” My voice was hardly a whisper. It had been this unspoken worry of mine and I needed to know the answer.

“Yes,” he said without hesitation. “Delia, I haven’t felt the pull of the bond. When Helvig and I approached you about it... it was the only thing that made any sense to either of us. The bond at work does crazy things to people. It could take years before either of us feels it. Although, that is rare, and it does normally snap into place immediately. It isn’t unheard of for it to take longer.”

I made a small sound of acknowledgment. It was the only thing I could manage.

“I knew I wanted you the moment your scent touched my nose. I looked for you and searched for you.
